The plaque on the monument reads:

This memorial is dedicated to the brave men and women of California and America who lost their lives during the Second World War; and to the one-hundred and forty-three local construction workers who died in service of their country on Omaha Beach, Normandy during Operation Overlord, 6 June 1944.

The bridge left incomplete remains as a symbol of all they had left behind.

Dedicated 14 August 1951 by Vice President Alben Barkley.
